Why do we all use the same units - and what does 'accurate' even mean?
Measurement is only useful if everyone agrees on the units. The SI system (metre, kilogram, second, ampere, kelvin, mole, candela) defines every base unit by a fixed physical constant, so a metre in Tokyo is a metre in New York, forever. Accuracy and precision are different: accuracy is how close a measurement is to the true value; precision is how repeatable it is. A good measurement is both. Record-keeping matters because a number without its unit, its method, and its uncertainty is not a fact - it is a claim.
The math
The SI base units are defined by constants: the metre by the speed of light (299,792,458 m/s), the second by caesium-133 (9,192,631,770 Hz), the kilogram by the Planck constant. A measurement should carry its uncertainty: '6,371 km ± 0.5 km' is a fact; '6,371 km' is a claim.
Why it matters
This is the discipline behind every card in this bot: every number is stated with its unit, its method, and its source. 'The Earth is 40,075 km around' is useful because it is in standard units, measured by standard methods, and reproducible. Good record-keeping - independent, reproducible, well-documented - is what separates a fact from a rumour.
