The emerging space club
2019-present
Who
Not an organisation - a scoreboard. A few nations crossed firsts in one generation: the United Arab Emirates reached Mars on a mission that was the country's first interplanetary attempt; South Korea flew its first fully domestic orbital rocket; and India's private sector began launching for the state that built the state's rockets.
Why it matters
UAE: the Hope orbiter (Al Amal) entered Mars orbit on 9 Feb 2021 - a nation's first trip to another planet, arrived on a global-class orbiter built with a university lab's engineering culture; Hazzaa al-Mansoori had already flown a Soyuz to the ISS in September 2019, the first Emirati in space. South Korea: Nuri (KSLV-II) reached orbit on 21 June 2022 - the country's first fully domestic orbital rocket, after the earlier KSLV-I had leaned on Russian hardware and a November 2021 Nuri flight had been a partial success; the Danuri orbiter arrived at the Moon that December. India: the 2020 reforms split ISRO's regulation (IN-SPACe) from its ranges and opened both to private industry; on 18 July 2026 Skyroot's Vikram-1 reached orbit - India's first private orbital-class launch, after the same vehicle failed in November 2024. One generation, several firsts; no adjectives needed. Status: September 2026.
Lineage
Every member's firsts lean on the established programmes - Hope's navigation heritage, Nuri's hard-won domestic engines, India's launch infrastructure now shared with private industry. The older cards in this family are the context.
