German astronomer and mathematician, director of the Königsberg observatory - also an independent discoverer of the Fourier transform and a pioneer of error statistics.
Why it matters
In 1838 he made the first successful measurement of a star's distance: 61 Cygni, using its annual parallax shift of just 0.31 arc-seconds - about the width of a peppercorn held at arm's length, measured against the night sky. That single number put the first star at a finite distance (~10.5 light-years) and proved the stars are other suns, not a painted dome. The unit that followed, the parsec (parsec = parallax + second), is still the standard unit of astronomical distance.
Lineage
Built on the parallax principle - the same geometry that puts the Moon at 384,400 km - and on two centuries of increasingly precise observation since Tycho Brahe. Enabled the cosmic distance ladder: every distance in astronomy, from the nearest star to the edge of the observable universe, is calibrated on a parallax measurement like his.
